There were approximately 5.8m people providing unpaid care in England and
Wales in 2011, an increase of 600,000 since 2001, according to census data
from the Office
of National Statistics (ONS).
The number of people providing unpaid care now represents just over one tenth
of the population, 10.3pc, up from 10pc in 2001.
The report said unpaid care was becoming increasingly common as the population
ages, with demand for care from partners and adult children expected to more
than double over the next thirty years.
