Social care funding gap in England 'can be plugged'

The funding gap for reforming social care in England could be plugged by raiding the NHS surplus or restricting access to benefits such as the winter fuel allowance, experts say.

A review published last year suggested care costs should be capped, but this would cost an extra £1.7bn a year.

The Nuffield Trust analysis believes this sum could be found from within existing public sector spending.

The think-tank said tax rises could be used too.

But it questioned whether that would be appropriate in the current financial climate and said if they were to be introduced they should be targeted at elderly people.

NHS Wiltshire considers retending for mental health services

NHS Wiltshire is considering retendering the mental health services in the county because of concerns about the existing provider, Avon and Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP).

It has emerged that in February GPs were so concerned that they requested a performance notice be issued to AWP.

The information, contained in minutes of meetings by the county’s Clinical Commissioning Committees, was presented to a board meeting of NHS Wiltshire and NHS Bath and North East Somerset last week.

The board was told that since February the concerns had been taken onboard by the management of AWP and changes have been made to bring about improvements in services.

Nominate Carer Support Wiltshire to be a charity of the year...

First Call Payment Protection's Charities of the Year

The charities with the most votes will receive donations and First Call Payment Protection will link with them on their website.

When someone buys one of their products and picks a charity as a beneficiary it will receive £5 from the sale and they will donate this to the organisation.

Rather than them picking the charities they would like to work with, they are hoping you will write in and tell them who you feel would best benefit from the money and why.

Charities can be nominated via their Facebook page and Twitter account* or you can email charityvote@protection.uk.net.

The closing date for nominations is 12midnight on Friday, August 31, 2012.

Individuals can only vote once for a charity of their choice. Nominations are only accepted from people aged 18 and over and the company's decision on the charities selected is final, no correspondence will be entered into.

*Log on to www.facebook.com/pages/protectionuknet/153820451337226?ref=pb or follow the company on Twitter by visiting www.twitter.com/protectionUKnet.

Roadshows raise awareness of support available for Wiltshire's unpaid carers

Unpaid carers and staff from GP practices across Wiltshire have been attending local roadshows to help raise awareness of the support available to carers.

Wiltshire Investors in Carers is a scheme which aims to increase awareness of work already being undertaken to support carers in GP practices in the county.

They can work towards bronze, silver and gold accreditation for recognising and supporting carers.

The scheme is run by Carer Support Wiltshire and is jointly funded by Wiltshire Council and NHS Wiltshire.
